Cats/8 miscarried kittens

Question
My Queen miscarried 8 premature kittens today and she seems to be acting fine. She still wants on my lap and is eating, drinking and socializing just fine. My question is, I think I still feel kittens moving in her belly. Is that possible? The kittens that she did miscarry were completely developed, but very small and had no hair. She was a stray that my husband and I couldn't see staying the winter outside, so we brought her in the house and let her adopt us. I don't know how old she is or any of her background.

Answer
Kari,

In all probability she has had all the kittens she is going to have, and I am sorry they miscarried.  It is possible she has more, and only a visit to your vet would confirm this.  There are times when the female could be carrying two litters conceived at different times and the later conceived litter may not go to full term. Usually within a few days to a week, the more fully developed litter may be born. Normally when this happens the miscarried litter has only one or two kittens as you have described.

Usually, it takes a few days after birth for the hemorrhaging to stop and for the uterus to return to normal, so it often appears that they should be carrying more kittens.  I think, in her case, a visit to your vet is in order to see what is going on. You might also set up an appointment to have her spayed.

Best regards... Norm.
