Cats/4 week old kittens

Question
my neighbor had a cat have kittens in her duct system, and mom abandoned all but one (she took one with her). After a few days, she realized mom wasn't coming back, so she has been taking care of them.
7 kittens has been too much on her, so I volunteered to help with 2.
They are cozy in a nice large tote (no lid, of course) with a litterbox and seperate snuggling area. I have been bottle feeding them every few hours, and soaking some kitten food, which they are getting used to. I don't put much in there, just like 15 small kibbles soaked in water.
My question is, one of the kitties bellies seems distended, can I use an over the counter wormer?
Do I seem to be doing everything correctly?
Our local kitten rescues are full up, and I can give them much more hands on attention than the shelter, until they are adoptable.
Thanks.

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

I am giving you a recipe for something called kitty glop. Try feeding your kittens this. It will put good weight on them and is very nutritious. You can also use this stuff to wean the kittens. Mix the dry kitten food with this. Your kittens will tear into it.

Most wormings on kittens are done when they are 6 weeks old. You can get an over the counter dewormer for them. Make sure the active ingrediant is Piperazine. This will take care of roundworms. Here's a link to one type.

As for everything else, you are doing fine. If they were younger than 4 weeks you would have to do a few things more. But you have everything under control. Raising kittens is fun and so rewarding. Good luck and write back if you have any other questions.

Ciao, Karen

KITTY GLOP

INGREDIENTS:
1 can evaporated milk (sweetened condensed)
2 tbsp. plain yogurt (not low or non fat)
2 tbsp. mayonnaise (real not light or No-Fat)
1 tbs. Karo Syrup (light)
1 pkg. Knox gelatin
1 egg yolk (beaten, )
1 cup Pedialyte (unflavored)
1 jar Stage One Baby food (chicken or turkey)

INSTRUCTIONS:
Mix milk, yogurt, mayonnaise, baby food, and syrup together well. Bring 1 cup pedialyte to boil and mix in Knox gelatin. Set aside. Mix egg yolk with small amount of milk mixture and beat well.

Add gelatin and pedialyte to milk mixture and beat well. Add in egg yolk mixture and beat well. Remember to not use egg substitute and keep egg white to a minimum.

Pour into bowl (with cover) and set in refrigerator. Glop will last for two weeks covered in refrigerator. Try freezing the mixture in ice cube trays and store the cubes in the freezer, thaw as many as needed.
Always warm glop to room temperature ,(milk form), or a little warmer, before feeding.
