Cats - Cat Drooling

Expert: Norman Auspitz - 12/23/2006

Question
I have a 7.5 year old persian Cat and she has recently started drooling violently.  It looks so terrible!  It breaks my hear to see her do this.

We took her to the vet and they recommended we get her teeth cleaned and that way they can look for any cavities, etc.  We did do this and the Vet said she just had a lot of plaque and some gingivitis which should clear up now that her teeth have been cleaned.  They also gave her a 3 year rabies shot and distemper shot.  She was fine for a day and now she has started this drooling thing back up again.  I feel terrible for her.

Before they cleaned her teeth they took blood work and everything was normal.  Do you have any suggestions?  I did take a video of her doing this drooling act to show the vet when we bring her in again but her vet visits are getting so expensive and I don't know what to do.  We just can not afford to take her right away again.

Any suggestions or insight you might have would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Sarah

Answer
Sarah,

I am not a vet, but it sounds like your Persian has more than gingivitis.  Anyway, gingivitis will not clear up with teeth cleaning, by itself!!!!!

Were it my cat, I would put her on a round of Clindamycin drops (a.k.a. antirobe aquadrops) and some prednisone (a steroid) to help relieve the gingivitis.  The Clindamycin should destroy the antirobic bacteria colonies that cause gingivitis for at least 6 months (usually longer) and the prednisone relieves any swelling.

In all probability, she is drooling because her teeth and gums hurt.  You can look in her mouth and see if the gums are inflamed and red.

I know when I go to the dentist my gums may be sore for a day or two after the dentist visit, but that would not explain any further drooling after a day or two.

If the teeth and gums are still inflamed you will need to go back to he vet <sorry about that> to get these medicines and get the right dosage. Normally, 10-14 days on the Clindamycin should do in any gingivitis.  The Prednisone is usually started at 5 mg once a day for 3 days then 5 mg every other day for a few days then 2.5 mg every other day for a few days, then every two days, until the Clindamycin is stopped.

I hope this is helpful.

Best regards... Norm.
