Question
My 4 yr old spayed female cat has patches of very small dark brown spots to the skin surrounding her nipples.  Wondering if you have any idea what this is. Thanks.

Answer
Christy,

If they are not new, patches of color in the skin are normal in cats, especially cats with patches of color in their fur such as tortoiseshell, black and white, etc. Freckles are also common. However if you think these are new patches of color, or if there is a texture different from the surrounding skin, you may want to consult your vet in case there is some skin or mammary cancer. However skin cancer in felines almost always occurs on the face (nose or ears) and mammary cancer usually shows up as lumps. But if you have any doubt, visit the vet to set your mind at ease.
