QuestionHi
My cat had 3 kittens 5 weeks ago and am looking for some advice on weaning them from their mother (which i wont do until 10 weeks) but also would like some advice that i could pass on to the new owners of my kittens and also what i need to do with the kittens before i eventually give them away eg worming, etc...
Thank you in advance, Tash.
AnswerHello Tash,
Well it is good to hear that you will not be finding homes for the babies until 10 weeks. That is the perfect age for kittens to be placed. They learn so much from their mother during this time. You should plan on visiting the vet for their first series of shots at around 6 weeks. Different vets will have different shot schedules, so check with yours to find out what he or she recommends. There is usually a total of 3 sets of kitten shots, along with worming if needed. Let your new owners know that it is very important to socialize new kittens regularly, so they don't become 'scaredy cats', as well as being sure they start out with a smaller litter box to begin with. Small enough that the kitten can easily get into it. Of course, fresh water available at all times, as well as beginning the new baby on a premium diet, kitten formula. Specifically, Precise, Innova as well as Wysong. The grocery store brands, like Meow Mix and others, are the equivalent of junk food for pets. It's best to start of with a good diet to help prevent problems arising later down the road. Also encourage new owners to use their kittens' name often, as cats can take longer to learn their name, than dogs. And of course, love and cuddles VERY often! Fortunately that is very easy to do with a brand new kitten!
Hope this will be helpful. Best of luck to you. Thank you for your inquiry and your intrest in this site.
