Cats/New cat won't eat

Question
Hello! After one of our 16-year-old cats passed away, we were "adopted" by an 8-year-old boy cat at the shelter we volunteer at. Misha loves other cats, and my other kitty, another 16-year-old, has been slowly warming up to him (but still occasionally gives him trouble).

The problem: Misha has been with us for 10 days and he hasn't eaten (or pooped). He's playful and happy. He seems to be drinking as he's been peeing in his box. The vet did a full checkup with bloodwork and Misha seems perfectly healthy. We've tried feeding him the dry food he ate at the shelter, wet food, Fancy Feast, baby food, chicken, and tuna -- no go. We also bought some of that high-calorie gel and tried sticking a bit on Misha's nose, and it just irritates him. He's a lovely cat, but of course we're super worried that he won't eat! Could he be depressed? (He was with his mom cat at the shelter...maybe he misses her?) What can we do? Thanks!

Answer
Hi Linda!
He hasn't eaten in ten days???  I can't believe he is still playful and happy!  You can force feed him but that is not a pleasant experience if the cat resists.  You have tried to give him everything I would recommend. If it were me, I would put the food down and if he doesn't eat it in a reasonable time, take it up.  Do that 2-3 times a day.  He won't starve, so he will eventually have to eat.  If he goes more than a few more days though, you may want to take him in for a check up.  The Vet can give him something to stimulate his appetite.  I sure can't imagine him going that long without eating!  Hope he eats for you soon.

God Bless,
Becky

Expertise

I am not a breeder,so please direct any breeding and/or birthing questions to an "expert" that is. I love all cats but my favorites are the Rex and Siamese. I used to show Cornish Rex as a hobby but have not been able to for a few years. Right now I have three Siamese and one Cornish Rex. As a former veterinarian assistant, I can help you with general healthcare issues. Being a cat owner for years, I will be glad to answer any behaviour and/or nutrition questions too. Please remember, I am NOT a Veterinarian, so if your kitty is seriously ill, please do not hesitate to contact a Vet.
