Cats/Post Nursing problem?

Question
Hello -
We just gave away our four kittens that "Pica" our calico had. She was an excellent first mother and we are very proud of her. One  day after giving away her kittens her entire  breast area has started to harden and get all leathery. Feels quite odd and I am a little concerned. Maybe more than she is. Is there anything abnormal about this? Is there anything I should be doing for her?

Thank you for your response...
Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,
This could be a mastitis situation beginning.  You may want to  check with your vet if the situation worsens or seems to cause discomfort for her, or becomes feverish.  Otherwise, these things will resolve themselves sometimes.
You might want to take a very warm washcloth and apply to the area if she seems to be uncomfortable.
Hope this is helpful, and thank you for your intrest in this site.
Thank you.
