Question
I have a wonderful 12 year old Seal Point Siamese.  I have had her since I was little. The reason I got her from my  family is because my mom got a Yorkie Terrier a few years ago and she started urinating in the house. I am now looking at getting a smaller dog but I am afraid she might have the same problems as before. Is there a way to bring the new puppy in the house to ensure she will not start urinating or is it just a bad idea thinking of another animal?

Answer
Hi Katie,
Cats do not like change.  The new dog in your mom's house caused the cat to be so stressed that she showed this by not using her litter box.  If you bring a new puppy in the house, you will more than likely experience the same.  Also, the fact that you have moved her into your home has caused some stress too.  As I said, Cats do NOT like change.  However, if you really want a new puppy, then you could try to keep them separated for awhile to get her used to the idea.  Keep her in a bedroom with a litter box, food and water.  Give her LOTS of attention and very very slowly introduce them to each other. Let them sniff each other under the door for about two weeks.  I know that sounds like a long time, but your cat is older and will not want to change ways very easily.  Besides, the longer she gets used to the new smell of a puppy, the better it will be.  The trick is to take it slow and give your cat TONS of attention so she won't get jealous.

God Bless,
Becky

I am not a breeder,so please direct any breeding and/or birthing questions to an "expert" that is. I love all cats but my favorites are the Rex and Siamese. I used to show Cornish Rex as a hobby but have not been able to for a few years. Right now I have three Siamese and one Cornish Rex. As a former veterinarian assistant, I can help you with general healthcare issues. Being a cat owner for years, I will be glad to answer any behaviour and/or nutrition questions too. Please remember, I am NOT a Veterinarian, so if your kitty is seriously ill, please do not hesitate to contact a Vet.
