Question
Do cats understand spankings?  If they are doing something that would endanger them, is this a case where spanking would help?

Answer
Hi,
I don't think cats really understand (or care) the spanking method of deterring unwanted behaviours.  I have found that a spray bottle of water, or small plastic soda bottle with some peas, or rice, or pebbles, or anything that makes noise and can be tossed (safely) in the direction of the cat, are the best ways of getting the message across to a cat.  Canned air is useful as well.  Many cats actually seem to enjoy controlled 'spanking'!  Especially in the lower back region.
Good luck! and thanks for your inquiry and interest in this site.
