Cats/cat aggression

Question
My 10-year old cat, Jasper (who is neutered), was always a bit aggressive (he was rescued as a kitten, but it's likely his mother was feral).  He has also always been very, very loving--he hates to be alone, loves people, etc.  Lately, though, his behavior has reverted to his three-year old state:  he'll attack my ankles for no reason, or turn and bite me after I've been petting him for a long time.  I spend more time at work, so I suspect this is part of the problem, but I'm growing a bit weary of this, even as I love the old guy very much.  I try to play with him to make up for my long days in the office, but he doesn't seem overly enamored of toys for very long.  We live in a one-story apt, so his options for independent exercise are limited.  And now, just recently, he's started waking me up at obscene hourse (3:30 or 4 in the morning) by jumping up and down on the bed, playing w/my hair, etc.  This is completely new behavior; he has always before this been a night sleeper, and would get into bed with me and stay there until I got up in the morning.  Any ideas or suggestions?

Answer
Hello MB!

I think by what you have told me , you already know why he is acting like this.  It is obvious that he is lonely and misses you!  Have you thought about getting him a companion?   A new little kitten would give him a friend and would keep him from being bored all day while you're at work.  Since he is a male, a female would be your best bet. I presume he is neutered, and you should have her spayed.  He will growl and spit at her at first, but eventually they will be best buddies!!  If you decided to do this, make sure you are with them for a few days though, at first, to make sure he does ok with her.

If you cannot or just do not want another cat, then I don't know what to tell you. I really think he acts aggressive because he wants attention.

Good luck and God bless!

I am not a breeder,so please direct any breeding and/or birthing questions to an "expert" that is. I love all cats but my favorites are the Rex and Siamese. I used to show Cornish Rex as a hobby but have not been able to for a few years. Right now I have three Siamese and one Cornish Rex. As a former veterinarian assistant, I can help you with general healthcare issues. Being a cat owner for years, I will be glad to answer any behaviour and/or nutrition questions too. Please remember, I am NOT a Veterinarian, so if your kitty is seriously ill, please do not hesitate to contact a Vet.
