Cats/matted hair

Question
I have a 23 year old Persian cat who has extremely matted hair around his rectum.  I am afraid to cut it because it almost seems as if his skin is intermingled with the mats.  I also cannot use the clippers for the same reason.  He has his claws and he is not one bit cooperative.  That's how he got this way.  He has an odor that is not good and I am afraid that he is infected under these mats, and I have no idea how to remove them.  Is there a solution which will dissolve them, or can I soak his back end and remove the dirt?  I really do not know what to do and I am so worried about him.  He is so old and I do not want to stress him, but neither do I want him to suffer from this.  Can you help me?

Answer
wow! 23  years old is quite the accomplishment! Unfortunately he will have to endure a certain amount of stress no matter how this problem is resolved.  If you can soak his back end, that would be great. as once that is cleaned off, it will make the shaving (not scissors) process easier.  Any cat shampoo will do, with very warm water.  Scruffing him will be helpful, as this releases endorphins into his system to help with relaxing.  Once the coat has been cleaned and dry, then clippering can be done, either by you or a professional groomer in your area who would be willing to allow you to schedule an appointment to stay with your kitty while the shaving is done, and get in and out as quick as possible,  as a 23 year old cat could become very unstable, very fast!  It would be safer for everyone concerned if the groomer will let you stay and assist. If you cannot find a groomer willing  to help, check with your vet or vet tech for assistance.  You are right to be concerned about infection setting up under the matts.  It is very likely that the skin condition underneath it all is going to require some medical attention of some sort.  I have actually seen raw, open, gaping,  maggot  infested wounds develop in the rear areas of cats and dogs in a relatively short period of time.  It will  be a good idea to take care kitty as soon as you can. Good luck with this.  Hope this has been helpful.
