Expertise
I am not a breeder,so please direct any breeding and/or birthing questions to an "expert" that is. I love all cats but my favorites are the Rex and Siamese. I used to show Cornish Rex as a hobby but have not been able to for a few years. Right now I have three Siamese and one Cornish Rex. As a former veterinarian assistant, I can help you with general healthcare issues. Being a cat owner for years, I will be glad to answer any behaviour and/or nutrition questions too. Please remember, I am NOT a Veterinarian, so if your kitty is seriously ill, please do not hesitate to contact a Vet.

Cats - mother cat is violent to older (14-16 weeks) litter of kittens

Question
Hello, I have a mother cat, who has been in my family for a year.  She had a litter of 3 kittens in May and since June has become mean to them.  At first, I thought this was just her way of weaning them.  She hisses when the come near (1-2 feet from her) or bats a paw at them and growls. She shows no affection towards these kittens at all, and actually acts like she doesn't know they are her children.  She was a very affectionate, playful, and overall good mother when they were born and nursing, but has doen a 180 now.  She is pregnant again and I wonder if this has something to do with the behavior. Please help.  I am considering giving her up because she has struck out and my children as well.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Angel,

You need to have her spayed.  Yes, she is weaning the kittens and doesn't want them bothering her. Just like humans, some cats just make better mothers than others do.  If you would have her spayed, she would be a much better pet.  She is probably tired... having a litter in May and now pregnant again?  Instead of giving her up, why don't you spay her and keep her as a family pet?  It would be hard to place an adult cat and she will either end up being abused or put down.
I hope you choose to keep her.

God Bless,
Becky
