Cats/my new kitten

Question
Hi there,
I am writing because last year I adopted 2 cats together from a shelter, they were Zoe, f, 1yr and Zeus, m, 2yr. Yesterday I adopted a playmate for Zoe who is very playful and seeming to be bored, Zeus is more of a lap cat. I brought her home yesterday from the same shelter, put her in the bedroom with the door open into the bathroom with her own litterbox and some wet and dry food. She is 5-1/2 months old, shy, and has always been in a cage with another cat who is also very shy. I have kept her separated from my cats who are very interested in meeting her. She, however, does not want anything to do with anyone, and she has not eaten or gone to the bathroom since I brought her home yesterday. I am concerned about her health. I am also concerned that she is scared since she is not with another cat as a companion. She perks up when my cats come to the door and "talk" to her. Also, Zoe has gotten in the room and Nyx, the new kitty, has come out to smell her and seems like she may be a bit better with her around. I am just wondering if I should let them be together to make the new kitten feel more comfortable or if I should continue to keep them separated. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Answer
Hello Echo,

Sorry I have not replied sooner, but I think the All Experts website was down as I couldn't get in .

You are doing the right thing, to let them sniff each other through a door first.  It's all about "smells".  They need to get used to each other first, and this is a great way of doing it.  I would introduce them when you feel comfortable doing so.  If your cats are not the agressive type, it may be fine.  My cats have never minded a new cat coming into my house.  There will be some hissing and growling, but unless there is a major fight, I wouldn't worry.  Before long, they will be best of friends!

God Bless,
Becky
