Question
i have a 12 year old female fixed cat and 3 other cats.  she has always been antisocial.  when the other cats came by she would hiss and swat them.  and always stayed to herself and didnt want to be held.  the other cats have been here for about 2 years. there were other cats on and off between them.  however in the last year she doesnt mind other animals including our dog. and always wants to lay on me or be with me.  i was wondering why? the other cats seem to still respect her and dont play with her and let her eat her food first though sometimes she will sit back and let them eat first.

Answer
HI Dave,

It's not uncommon for older cats to take a very long time to get used to changes, such as the introduction of new cats. It's possible that it has simply taken her 2 years to get used to the idea of room-mates! Many cats mellow out and become more affectionate as they get older.

There is also a light possibility that she is not feeling well, and seeking out extra comfort because of this. I am not saying that is likely, but I do recommend for cats over 12 to have annual blood panel and geriatric exams to catch illness early. The senior blood panel should check kidney and liver function, signs of diabetes, and thyroid levels. Many conditions older cats are prone to, such as hypertyroidism and kidnery failure, are easily managed with changes to the diet if caught early. Any time I notice a non-temporary behavior change in an animal I take them to the vet for a check just to be sure.

If all is well, enjoy the newfound peace and harmony in your home! :)
