Question
What number blade should I use to cut mats off of a cat. I know the skin is thin and would like to use the right blade <safest blade>. The cat has been declawed and the owner will be with me. I have groomed and striped hundreds of dogs but never a cat. Thanks for any info. Mike

Hi Mike,
The best blade is going to be a 10.  (And, if you have a Moser put it on the longer length.  Moser+cat= beautiful finish!)  I do alot of cats and usually use a 7F against the grain..very smooth..but can be a problem if you are not experience with using blades against the grain.  Keep in mind to S T R E T C H  that kitty to be sure not to clip across the folds of the skin.  Roll the skin tight over the elbows and knee areas.  I usually go from the collar line down and stop at the first 'sock' just below the elbow, and to the hock in the back.  I also usually scissor the long tufts from the pads (keeps down litter tracking)  Careful around the rear end area...cats HATE when you mess with the hind quarters.  Scruffing the cat will help stretch the underside, chest and belly area.  If you have him scruffed and then set his rear end down lightly, he will spread his legs, making it easy to get in and shave between the back legs.  Remember to do a little bit at a time with cats so as not to catch the skin in the clipper.  If you feel the SLIGHTEST resistance, stop and check.  The tiniest nick can spread apart like a gaping wound in no time!  Also careful around the nipples, as they can be clipped of easily.  Just keep a light hand in those areas.  Trim the back claws before you even start.  Most cats can bunny kick and give you a good scratch!
