Question
I already have a male 9 and a half year old King Charles Spaniel Belenheim dog. I'm thinking of getting a male puppy King Charles Spaniel. Would this be kind to introduce a puppy to our dog?

Answer
Hi Katie,
I don't know what kind of health your boy is in, if he is in good health, it should be fine. If not, I would have to know more about the dog to answer the question.

Most Cavaliers love the company of other dogs and are professionals at getting other dogs to like them. It may be a bit of a shock at first but they do adjust very well and you won't have long term problems. Also I would try to get a more laid back puppy. Don't look for the alpha pup as that may cause problems, the older dog should be naturally the leader at least in the beginning, sometimes with a dog that age, things will gradually change as the puppy becomes acclimated to your home.

When introducing the puppy into your family, make sure you give the old boy lots of attention. Put him on your lap and let him feel secure that you still love him. As I am sure you know, Cavaliers can be sensitive and a bit dramatic.

It won't be instant love, but it certainly will work out in the end.
Also if you have a well behaved cavalier, the new dog will pick up on the habits of the other. So really, things should go very well.

If you have any other questions, let me know. The best of luck with both dogs!

Sincerely,
Liz Gregory
