Cavalier King Charles Spaniels/Cavalier licks
Expert: Liz Gregory - 2/17/2009
QuestionHello,
Our Cavalier has developed a habit of licking air. Typically it happens when he is with us on the couch or bed. Could this be a deficiency in his diet?
Also, he recently had Luxating Patellar surgery and a small 1" x 1" area of his skin did not have the hair grow back. Our vet recommended fish oil, however he is on so many other medications due to SM, we are nervous adding more to his diet. Thanks for any help you can offer.

AnswerHi Kevin,
I am really not sure what to tell you about the air licking. There really isn't much on it. I read up a bit about fly-catching syndrome but I don't think that is quite the same thing. My personal feeling is that it is closer to a habit such as tail chasing. We also have a cavalier that loves to lick the air or our couch or whatever she can think of. My teenage daughter says she has O.L.D. (obsessive licking disorder). I know that it likely isn't a diet deficiency or allergy. I feed totally grain free and supplement with digestive enzymes and vitamin e, plus some type of meat. If he isn't licking his paws or such, he is probably fine.
Most likely, the air licking is from boredom or anxiety. He may just be a very active dog and when he is resting, does this for something to do.
As far as the skin and hair not growing, I would not hesitate to give him fish oil, there is nothing that could harm him in it even when combined with other medication unless your vet told you not to give him fish or there were warnings of that type on the prescription labels. You could always supplement with fresh raw fish or even canned tuna or sardines.
However, in my opinion, I think you would do better with vitamin e. I buy vitamin e oil, which you can put right onto his food or onto the bare area.
I am very concerned that he has so many health problems. Please feel free to contact me at any time. I am curious as to the diagnosis of your boy's illnesses.
Good luck!
Liz
