Cayman Islands/Work in the Caymans and other offshore islands
Expert: Drew Wilmoth - 11/9/2008
QuestionHi, I am looking to build a career which will allow me to work in the Caymans or other offshore locations. Currently, in the UK I am a commercial bank manager, and so am planning to study for my ACCA qualification which is tied to my degree background, but appears to be an important step to finding work in the Cayman. However, I am a bit unsure as to what specialisms would be best for the work out there? if I come from a public practice background would that prevent me from working in the financial services background etc? any info would be great - and also what level of experience would be required for a bottom of the ladder accounting job in Cayman.
Many thanks in advance for any help,
Neil
AnswerI would first be remiss if I did not mention that there are numerous jobs in the banking sector in Cayman for which particular accounting qualifications are not needed. You may first wish to seek employment in these areas given your experience as a manager.
An ACCA or CPA qualification is preferred for accounting positions in Cayman. There are a few positions which do not require such qualifications but such entry level posts are often filled by Caymanians who build skills by working as they continue taking classes.
There are a wide range of financial services related companies in Cayman. Each has its own unique demands and there is a niche for many differing specialties.
For specific qualifications in the accounting field for other islands you would need to ask someone with expertise in those other offshore jurisdictions.
