Question Hi Drew! I've decided quit my job at a Restaurant on the Island, because my boss was giving me a hard time. My permit will expire on the end of October. How long can a extend my permit? Do I have to leave the Island after I quit?
Thank you
Answer If you quit your job, your employer is required to notify Immigration immediately. Failure to do so could result in a fine of CI$5000 to your employer. You should assume they will promptly comply with the requirements of the law.
You may choose to continue working with your current employer until the end of your current contract. You are free to apply for employment with another employer now for a permit to commence upon the expiration of your previous permit.
If you current permit expires and a new permit has not been granted yet with a new company, you may inquire about applying for a tourist visa and any extension as needed. You would not be eligible to work with only a tourist visa.
If you decide to renew a work permit with your current employer then you may remain in Cayman and continue working by operation of law while any permit renewal application is being processes so long as the renewal application was submitted prior to the expiration of your current permit and assuming you are not holding a seasonal temporary permit.
If your current permit expires with no other work permit application pending then you will normally be allowed to remain in the Cayman Islands for approximately two weeks while you wrap up your affairs and then you must leave Cayman.
