Cayman Islands/Newly hired on the Island and don't know where to stay?

QuestionHello,
I am moving to the island within a few weeks and I am wondering what the best option would be for me as far as housing is concerned while I look for an apartment. I'm basically wondering if there is some affordable housing (other than resorts) on the west side of the Island while I check out some more permanent housing. I'm not quite sure even where to start until I am on Island so any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
AnswerKaran,
There is a constant flux of people coming and going from the island in all job sectors. With the economy in overall decline there is more available rental housing than ever before.
I assume from your question that your employer is not offering interim housing at a hotel. Some employers, particularly those in the diving and tourism sectors, will try to pair you up with a current employee who can offer a spare room or at least a couch for a few days while you get settled. If you are in one of these sectors then you should try to speak directly with the manager at the location you will be working to inquire about options.
If you are on your own to find interim housing you have a few options. You could look to arrange your permanent housing before you arrive on island. You may want to check out online classified listings of persons seeking a roommate. Check out the Real Estate and Rentals category at www.ecaytrade.com
You might feel more comfortable with a few days at a guest house. Eldemire's guest house located off South Church Street is close to downtown George Town and is one of the more affordable locations. See www.eldemire.com
You will be arriving as high season is coming into full swing. Cheap accommodations for just a few days may be hard to come by. Still, with occupancy rates low, It might be worthwhile to consider one more option... renting a timeshare week. You would probably need to pay some taxes and fees for utilities but you might find some comparatively inexpensive options for up to one week for around US$500 + taxes and fees. Confirm availability of your desired dates before committing. Run a Google search for "rent cayman timeshare" to find some options. Note that Morritt's Tortuga Club or the Royal Reef Resort are located in East End at the far end of the island from George Town.
