Cayman Islands/Snorkeling in Grand Cayman

Question
Hi Robert,

My wife and I are visiting Grand Cayman in Jan, and my wife is particularly looking forward to snorkeling as I can't swim! I've gathered information on a number of recommended snorkeling locations (cemetery reef, wreckage of Cali, off Rum Point etc); however, have a quick question - how do you actually get to the spot from the shore i.e. if it's 20 meters inside from the beach then do you just swim or would I need to hire a boat/excursion to take us to good snorkeling spots?

Would also appreciate if you recommend any great snorkeling locations which are not very far from the beach (we're staying at the Marriott on the Seven Mile beach). Many thanks and your time is most appreciated!

Regards,
Manish

Have you checked my website - there are links to some of the guides to snorkelling in Cayman (http://www.gotocayman.com) on my scuba page.

The sites are all good - they tend to be a short swim (up to 50m) from the breach.  Also worth considering are Eden Rock (only when there are no cruise ships in), Smith's Cove on South Sound.  It is also possible to go snorkeling near the turtle farm.  A must has to be one of the snorkel trips to Stingray City or Stingray City sandbar - some of the watersports operators offer a helf day trip (including lunch) to two or three sites - see some of the old trip reports and links on my Watersports pages.

Hope you enjoy your trip!

Regards
Robert

One warning - be careful of the sea urchins on some of the rocks!
