Question
Hi Robert,

I'm thinking about moving to the cayman islands at the end of the year for the tourist season. I would be interested in restaurant work for 6months or so. I have a lot of experience and basically i'm wondering of you can tell me if there much work like that going...and how would i go about applying? Do i contact a restaurant, or apply for a working permit?

Any info you could give me would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Carrie, 23.

Have you checked the resources in my FAQ at http://www.gotocayman.com?

Usually a business has to advertise a job to show that there are no Caymanians who want it before offering it to an expat.  However, I think that if it is only a short-term position, then the rules may not be as strict, especially in the hospitality industry.

Peak season is from end November to April/May (depending on Easter), so I would guess that the restaurants and hotels would be trying to get staff in before this.  I think that you should keep an eye on the classified adverts in the newspapers (Cayman Compass and Cayman Net News). CaymanNetNews have the whole paper online every day, so that may be your easiest option (http://www.caymannetnews.com).  However, I think that you should also approach some of the hotels/restaurants directly.  If successful, it is the employer that applies for the work permit.  There are slightly different rules to permanent and temporary work-permit applications.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Regards
Robert
