Cayman Islands/Scuba Cayman

Question
I am a PADI OWSI and would like to in Cayman.  How difficult is the whole work visa package and how long would it take.

Answer
There is a far greater demand for scuba instructors in the Cayman Islands than the local labor market can provide.  As such, the large majority of dive instructors in Cayman are ex-patriots.

Work permits are readily approved and a potential employer can guide you through the paperwork and the process. You must first obtain a job offer from a prospective employer and they will apply for the work visa.  You cannot apply for the work visa independently of an employer.

Typically, you will need to provide a clearance letter from your local police department listing any convictions or stating that you have none. Another requirement is for certain medical tests, and there is a proscribed form for your doctor to complete.  You must pay theses costs, but then the employer pays for the permit itself.

Processing times vary according to the type of permit being sought.  A six month temporary permit can be processed quite quickly, in a matter of days, once all of the relevant paperwork is submitted.  This is an administrative matter handled within the Department of Immigration. A one year (or longer) permit requires review by a full Work Permit Board, and takes longer.  Depending upon their caseload, that could be a few weeks to a couple months.

You MUST NOT be present in the Cayman Islands while the application paperwork is being filed and processed. You are not permitted to seek work if you are in the islands on a visitor's visa.  You should seek employment via e-mail, phone calls, and/or written letter.

High season runs from mid-November to mid-April, though most dive jobs are year-round positions.
