Cayman Islands/Working on Grand Cayman
Expert: Robert Clark - 10/8/2006
QuestionDear Robert,
I am seriously considering looking for work on Grand Cayman next year. I have worked in the hospitality industry for 10 years, am 32-years old and have 5 years experience in Conference & Catering and speak many languages. I currently live and work in Sweden (where I am originally from). I would most likely apply at the Ritz-Carlton, Westin etc and all big resorts on the island. Would I need to go to the island for an interview or do you think I could interview over the phone or maybe at a hotel in Europe within the same hotel chain for example?? As a Conference Services or Catering Manager would you know what salary I could expect to earn and would I be able to live comfortably on that? I realise I would need to buy a car. Would it be reasonable to think that I could afford to live on my own? Would I be able to save money? I miss living in an international environment, I believe I would find this on the island! I very much look forward to your answers.
Many thanks!
Sara

Given the expense of travelling there, it would probably best just to write to them so see what they have available (if anything). You have to be aware that an employer has to prove that there isn't a Caymanian that can fulfil the role (even with a little training) before offering it to an expat - usually by advertising in the local papers. They then have to apply for a work permit - this process can take up to six months. Certainly forother posts it isn't unusuall to be interviesed (maybe several times) by phone, and/or by a partner in a local city. Check out the resources in my FAQ at

No idea on salary range - but check some of the living costs in my FAQ. Really depends on how extravagant lifestyle you live and where on the island you rent.
All the best!
Robert
Not sure what the policy with the indivicual companies for these types of roles. Certainly the hotel managers tend to come from within the chain and transfer.
