Question
hello sir,
i had this query - whether mental dwelling in sex is equivalent to performing it ? For instance take the following -

1. Mentally thinking of being in company of a beautiful girl v. actually being so.
2. mentally thinking of kissing v. actually doing so.
3. mentally masturbating v. actually doing so.
4. mentally having vaginal intercourse v. actually doing so.
etc....etc....

do all these instances whether at mental level or real level have the same negative impact on a person. And same detrimental to an aspirant of Brahmacharya ?

Thank YOo

Answer
Sexual thoughts when dwelt upon ultimately culminate into physical deeds leading to added desire, added Samakara-s (impressions) & ultimately loss of vital energy that always ends in suffering. Hence the same should be prevented from developing and flowering.

Questions concerning the practice of 'Brahmacharya' to know the self, & the means required are dealt with here.

Experience

The term 'Yoga' is a derivative of the Samskruth verb 'Yuj' which refers to union. 'Yoga', also called 'Brahma vidy‚' is the eternal dissolution of the individual 'Aham' (Ego) into the Atman (self) for 'Mukti' (liberation). Mere indulgence in '¬sana' or physical postures is not Yoga. ¬sana is only one limb or 'Anga' of Yoga. The eight limbs viz. Yama, Niyama, ¬sana, Pr‚n‚y‚ma, Praty‚h‚ra, Dh‚rana, Dhy‚na and Sam‚dhi are the means to Yoga. Brahmacharya or spiritually based continence is one of the important components of 'Yama'. 'Brahmacharya':- "Brahmani charyathey ithi" - "To surrender one's Ego and go with the will of the Almighty."
