Celibacy/Abstinence/SIddhi in life of sages vs self realization

The so called siddhi power obtained by the sages/saints/shamans. Do they come because they have been cultivated or because when someone attain self realization, they possess them as a by-product? Such siddhi are levitation, bilocation, prophecy, control over nature, etc. At the same it is said that siddhi are an obstacle to self realization.

Siddhi-s, like everything else, come because it is so destined, as regards that Jiva. Even then, these come to the extent proposed by the higher power & not more. Some of these come en route to realizing the self and are hence termed byproducts. Attachment or desire to any kind of Siddhi is an obstacle to realizing the self.

Questions concerning the practice of 'Brahmacharya' to know the self, & the means required are dealt with here.

The term 'Yoga' is a derivative of the Samskruth verb 'Yuj' which refers to union. 'Yoga', also called 'Brahma vidy‚' is the eternal dissolution of the individual 'Aham' (Ego) into the Atman (self) for 'Mukti' (liberation). Mere indulgence in '¬sana' or physical postures is not Yoga. ¬sana is only one limb or 'Anga' of Yoga. The eight limbs viz. Yama, Niyama, ¬sana, Pr‚n‚y‚ma, Praty‚h‚ra, Dh‚rana, Dhy‚na and Sam‚dhi are the means to Yoga. Brahmacharya or spiritually based continence is one of the important components of 'Yama'. 'Brahmacharya':- "Brahmani charyathey ithi" - "To surrender one's Ego and go with the will of the Almighty."
