Cellular Phones/Blackberry Curve Email attachments?
Expert: Roberto Serrano - 2/19/2008
QuestionQUESTION: Hello.
I have just begun using unified messaging (UM) for my small business. UM allows me to send voice business voice messages to the email account set up on my Blackberry (using pop w/ microsoft outlook 2007). The voice message arrives as a message.wav file as an attachment. However, I continue to get the message, "Unsupported media type in header". Also, I am able to listen to the message.wav file via the web site of my UM provider and via Outlook 2007. Is there something I need to adjust on my Blackberry that would allow me to listen to these messages? Finally, I recently had another UM provider (Vonage) but canceled there service...I had no problem listenting to a message.wav file when it came from Vonage.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Keith
ANSWER: Hello Keith,
I was looking at the specs for the Blackberry Curve and found out that wav files are not supported it only supports mp3 file format. To sucessfully open Wav files you need a device running handheld firmware version 4.2, 4.2 now ships on the Pearl, 8800 and of course will ship on the upcoming 8300. You also need to be running BES 4.1 Service Pack 2. I hope this helps you out.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick response. I do have a follow up questions though. As I mentioned in my previous email, I had UM thru Vonage and was able to listen to wav files. In fact, I still have some in my inbox and I just listed to one. Within the email is states the attachment is: Application: voice-message.wav (79k). Is this a different type of wav file? I don't understand?
ANSWER: No it is not a different type of wav file however it could just mean that you either need to update your firmware in order to be able to listen to it since your provider is not vonage anymore. Another suggestion is can you save it then play it? Which version of the curve do you have? I just spoke to BB support and was told that BES 4.1.2.x would resolve the issue with the wave files. Also, I just came across a piece of third party software called AudioPOP that sounds like it might do the trick. Unfortunately I can't post a link to it, but it's even listed here in the CrackBerry.com store for $14.99 (everyone seems to have the same price). I haven't tried it, so I don't know if it will truly fit your need, but it sounds like that's what it is designed to do.

QUESTION: Robert.
I have the BB Curve 8320. I have internet email, not the Blackberry Enterprise Server so I assume BES 4.1.2.x will not fix my problem? Is that a correct assumption? I know you will find this a stupid question, but how do I update my firmware???
Thanks.
Keith
AnswerHello Keith,
You are correct that update will not fix the problem. If you ever want to know the website where you can update your phone at it is the following link https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=577BCC914F9E55D5E4E4F82F9F00E7D4 It seems like your problem will more than likely be solved with the AudioPOP software theis is the link
http://software.crackberry.com/product.asp?id=10396&n=AudioPOP-for-Voice-Mail-%2 it comes with a 7 day trial. I would suggest to try out the 7 day trial and after you see that this has fixed your problem purchase it.
