My wife's KRZR contains very few contacts but suddenly i can no longer edit the ones that are entered.  When
I select a contact from the list and hit "enter", it simply returns to the main menu.  When I try to use the options soft key and select edit, it still returns to the main menu.  Any ideas?

Cell phones are pretty much like home computers at times they need to be reset. You can reset the phone by pulling out the battery while the phone is powered on this will reboot the phones software and usually fix any problems that have arrived. If this does not fix the problem take a look at the back behind the battery there is a circle sticker that is supposed to be white its a water mark if it is any color other than white that means either water humidity or some type of condensation has gotten to the phone and pretty much damaged the phones power board. If the water mark is white and the reboot did not fix your problem it is possible the phones software is simply corrupted you might have to call your cell phone provider to see if your phone is still under the one year manufacturers warranty and see if they can exchange it for you.
