I am an expert on BlackBerrys, Treos, HTC devices and iPhones as well as cellphones and aircards. I have over 15 years of experience in both the wireless and wireline world with the carriers. I have a lot of knowledge regarding the wireless providers - their services, prices and policies, both GSM (AT&T (formerly Cingular) and T-Mobile) and CDMA (Verizon, Sprint/Nextel (iDEN)). I am very familiar with the individual devices and their specifications. I can also answer questions regarding BlackBerrys, iPhones and other PDAs, both Palm-based and Windows-based. I can troubleshoot most any problem someone is having with their cellular device or with the provider.

Question
I am currently a customer at AT&T.  My mother gave me her LG vx8350. I spoke to AT&T this morning and they said the phone is not compatible with their service. Also, I can't find a SIM card on this phone. Can I switch my Nokia phone with this LG phone?

Answer
Hi Ali -

The LG VX8350 is a Verizon phone and works on Verizon's CDMA network. AT&T works on GSM. These are incompatible and you can only use a GSM phone on a GSM network. Verizon does not use SIM cards because CDMA does not require this. They code the ESN number of the phone to your wireless number in their network. The only way that you can use this phone is to switch your service to Verizon, otherwise, I would suggest you consider either giving the phone back to your mother or giving it to someone who has Verizon service. If you want a new phone, your best bet is to get one directly from AT&T or at least buy an AT&T-branded phone from someone else. I hope this helps. Thanks. DebiN
