Cellular Phones - Uganda cell use?

Expert: DebiN - 6/25/2009

Question
Hello I am going to Africa (Lira, Uganda 7-9 hours north of the capital) to volunteer and want to take a disposable cell phone to use just in case of emergency. Where do I get such a thing and how much do I need to pay for the actual phone? I know the calls are about 4 dollars per minute to the US but I have no idea how much the phone is.
Thank you so much for any assistance you can give me. As you can imagine my mother worries ;)

Answer
I'm not very familiar with disposable cell phones, but know that your best bet is to either get one at the airport or speak with the group that you are volunteering with, because they may a special deal with a company there or something like that. There are probably not a lot of choices and talking with the group you will be volunteering with is definitely your best bet. Sorry that I don't have more info, but I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction.
