Cellular Phones/Overseas phone not working

Question
Hello, I was wondering if you can help me out with my phone. I am a loyal cingular/att customer and I just received a phone as a present from overseas. It is a LG KU990 Viewty bought from Malaysia. The phone is unlocked, however, I can't get the phone to work. I inserted my previous att SIM card and most of the time, the phone just registers as "Emergency Calls Only". I searched up online in forums the things I should key in for the APN but the phone still doesn't work properly. Sometimes I get signal, but most of the time I don't.

When I tried to select my Network manually, my phone detects the ATT 2G network but when I tried selecting that network, it says "Unregistered". Can you please advice?

Thanks in advance

Answer
I'm very sorry that people are steering you in the wrong direction for your problem. The issue is that the device you purchased only works on one US band (1900). The AT&T network uses both 850 and 1900. The reason that your phone occasionally works is because it will periodically pick up the 1900 signal where you are. The places that you are mostly are 850 and that is why it doesn't work. You will not be able to make this phone work since it is not able to access 850 and can't be made to do this. I strongly recommend that you send this phone back to the person who gave it to you as a present so that they can give it to someone else and just let them know that it is not compatible with your carrier. If you want a new phone, either buy one directly from AT&T (your best bet) or make sure that the phone is quad band and works on both the 850 and 1900 bands in the US on the GSM network. I hope this helps. Thanks. DebiN
