i am trying to find equipment that will allow me, as a participant on a telephone
call to hear a conversation the person at the other end is having with someone nearby--but who is not on the phone.

in other words, i want to hear both the person i'm talking on the phone with, and also hear an individual who is talking to
him in the same room. about 10-20 feet away. i prefer this setup  to be wireless and unseen....i understand there may be a problem picking up the voice of the person in the background, but can't this be achieved via wireless speakerphone or some enhanced microphone or a second phone devoted to hearing that individual in the background? thank you

I believe that your question doesn't relate to cellular technology, but in answer to your question, the only way that you can hear people in the background is through a speakerphone of some type, whether through a standard speakerphone on the phone itself, or a conference room type speakerphone, like a Polycom or other conferencing speakerphone. There isn't anything that I am aware of that is discreet or hidden that will do this or will allow you to be on a private conversation with someone but also hear people in the background 10-20 feet away.
