Cellular Phones/International cell phone and calling

Question
My boyfriend is in the military and is currently being sent to Japan. I know the idea is kind of ridiculous but do you know about any cell phone company that allows you take a cell phone and use it in another country? I know each country has their own companies but is there something where he can have a local number and call the states whenever? Anything that would give us the option of being able to talk whenever, not just when he is in his room.

Answer
There isn't going to be any inexpensive way for you and your boyfriend to talk via cell phone. What you might want to consider is Skype via computer or perhaps if both of you have a BlackBerry, you could use BlackBerry Instant Messenger to communicate or with an iPhone, you can use different apps to communicate, but as far as talking via cell phone, there is no way for him to call you with a local Japan number to the US and not be charged per minute for international calling. You just can't do it. I really think that Skype or instant messaging is going to be the most cost effective way to communicate. Sorry that I didn't have better news for you. If it helps to know, it's not about the different companies, it's about calling from one country to another. Thanks. DebiN
