Cellular Phones/Use of USA cell phone in the UK

Question
What is the cheapest way for my daughter to use her cell phone as an emergency contact while on vacation in the UK for 2/3 weeks?  As a custodial parent she needs a means for her EX to contact her should an emergency arise while she is out of country and her daughter is on visitation with her father.

Answer
If she has a phone that is capable of working in the UK (i.e., from T-Mobile or AT&T or a WorldPhone from Sprint or Verizon), then all she needs to do is to contact her carrier and get international capability and pay the $5.99 a month for the discounted international service so that the calls received (or sent) are slightly less expensive. If she has a phone today that is not international capable, i.e., a Sprint or Verizon phone that only works on their US CDMA network, then she would need to get a brand new phone to use it abroad. If that's the case, then she would be better off just getting a phone card and cheap GSM phone once she gets to the UK and providing the phone number to her Ex. It won't be her normal number and it will be international and the ex would have to incur the larger cost of the international call. I hope this helps. Thanks. DebiN
