Cellular Phones/AT&T phone w/sim card

Question
I have a very old ATT plan and need to replace my phone.  The face is so scratched I can hardly read it.  I have an old Cingular phone that a friend had (which is who my original company was) but when I put my sim card in that phone, It says I need a code to unlock the phone.  How do I get around this without having renew my contract and buy a new phone.  Thank you.

Answer
The "blue" AT&T SIM card will only work with an AT&T branded (not AT&T Mobility, but old AT&T Wireless) phone or a SIM unlocked phone. It will not, as you have seen, work with a Cingular branded or AT&T Mobility branded phone. If you don't want to renew your contract, buy a SIM unlocked quad band GSM phone. Personally, I would suggest getting a new free phone from AT&T and renewing your contract. It's worthwhile, honestly.
