Answer
Though I know that you want to update the device by yourself to solve the volume problem, but you can't do that unfortunately. Your carrier would need to update the firmware on this phone if they have an update available. When you update the firmware on a cell phone, it has to be the firmware for the phone AND the carrier. There's no trick to this, you just can't do it.

So, I would recommend that you take the phone back to your carrier and if it is 30 days old or less, get a different make and/or model of phone. Let them know that the phone just isn't working well for you. All phones sold by your carrier should work properly on their network, so you may just have gotten a lemon. They don't sell any phones that haven't passed rigorous tests to validate that they work properly on the network. If you love this model, or the phone is over 30 days but under 12 months, just have them give you a new one of the same model and see if you have the same problem.

But please, do not tell them that you tried to download firmware to the phone. That type of thing can invalidate a warranty. Just tell them that the phone doesn't appear to access the network properly and that the volume is too soft. They will assist you, I promise.

If you happened to not get the phone from your carrier, then the issue is that the phone was not intended for your carrier's network and that is why it is not working properly. I hope this helps.
