Cellular Phones/Using an iphone without service

Question
I have a chance to purchase an iphone cheap from someone because their service was terminated. I have no interest in using the iphone as a phone or getting service on it. What I would like to know is would I still be able to use the iphone to do things like store and view movies, music etc. or will nothing work without having it activated with a service plan?I was using a PSP for this this purpose but it broke and my thought was that the iphone would make a nice replacement. I watch allot of video on the go.
Thank You

Answer
Yes, you can use an iPhone without servie. Here's what you need to do though. The device will have to already be activated and if the person can leave you with their SIM card, you really need that also. Even though the SIM isn't active, the iPhone needs it to be in the device. Then, you will be able to use the iPhone in any area with WiFi or use any applications that don't require access to the internet wherever you don't have WiFi. It works just like an iTouch, basically, without a plan. Hope this helps. Thanks. DebiN
