Cellular Phones/AT&T Gophone SIM

Question
Hello DebiN,

I am visiting the United States for three months. I recently purchased an AT&T prepaid SIM together with that stupid U2800A phone that might be the worst cellphone in the whole world. My cellular that I brought along, a Nokia 5140i, has no SIMlock and still is not accepting the AT&T prepaid SIM, it is prompting for a "Restriction Code". When I was at the dealer, he gave me some test SIM card that did not bring up that prompt, but also didn't manage to log on to the AT&T network within several minutes. Therefore I had no choice but take the U2800A.
Is it possible that the prepaid SIM card itself is now locked to that U2008A and if yes, is the dealer able to change this?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Regards,
Florian

Answer
All prepaid SIM cards are associated with a specific phone, so yes, your SIM won't work with any other SIM locked phone, however, it should work in a SIM unlocked phone. The reason your Nokia is not going to work is because in order for a phone to work on AT&T's network, it has to have the ability to work on both US bands. This phone only works on one (1900). It's likely that the area you are in is covered by the 850 band. I know that you can't stand the phone you got but I believe it's likely your only go phone choice that won't cost you a fortune. I hope this helps.
