Cellular Phones/Using GoPhone with iPhone 3G

Question
I am trying to use the GoPhone plan from AT&T on a iPhone 3G.  Based on my research here is what I have done so far.

1. Bought a used iPhone 3G 16 GB from a friend.
2. Bought a cheap $10 AT&T GoPhone from BestBuy
3. I activated the SIM card from the new GoPhone online using the SIM card number and the IMEI number for the phone.
4. I bought a minute and data plan online and received my new phone number.

When I put the SIM card in the iPhone I get a "Invalid SIM" message in the upper left hand part of the screen.  I also get a message asking me to insert a SIM card with no PIN lock.

At this point I cannot do anything with the iPhone. Any assistance is appreciated

Answer
UPDATE: I recently received new information that indicates that you can use a GoPhone SIM with an iPhone. However, in your situation, the iPhone you have is set up to only use a post paid SIM card. Check with AT&T and find out if they can set up your iPhone to be used with a GoPhone SIM card. They may be able to do this. If they can't, then the phone would need to be jailbroken. Hope this helps.
