Cellular Phones/Sim-unlock

Question
I've got an HTC Inspire 4G on AT&T and was wondering, if I Sim-unlock the phone, would AT&T be able to tell what type of phone it is. The reason why I ask is I dont want to pay for the 4g data-plan. I was also wondering, if they cant tell what phone it is, could I put that I have something else on their website (like a samsung impression) and get the unlimited data plan for non-smartphones and have it work that way?

Answer
If you SIM unlock your phone, AT&T will still be able to tell that you have a SmartPhone. AT&T can see the IMEI for any phone that you use and if you use a SmartPhone, they will require a data plan. No way around this. I might suggest you just get the $15.00 plan that provides 200MB of data and try to use WiFi whenever possible. Otherwise, you will need to use the $25.00 2GB plan. You can't use the $15.00 unlimited plan for cell phones. It won't fly with AT&T and it will get cut off because they will know you are using a SmartPhone. So don't bother getting your phone unlocked, it won't make a bit of difference. Sorry that I didn't have better news for you. Thanks.
