Cellular Phones/SMS

Question
Thank you in advance for your answer :)
My question:

Why is it despite all the advancement in technology, a single SMS is still capped at 160 characters?
Is there any limitations or shortcomings if we were to increase it to something of say some other figure?

Answer
SMS by it's nature is only 160 characters. It was designed for short messages only. What we have instead is MMS and email. There's nothing that's ever going to chagne with SMS, but if you want to send lengthier messages, just use MMS or email. One thing that may help you in understanding this limitation is that SMS uses the voice network to carry the messages and the other methods use the data network. I hope this helps.
