A WiFi connection is where a device is using a wireless connection to connect to another device that has a direct connection to the internet. I.e., your computer is connected to the internet via a router and cable to a modem (either DSL or cable modem) and the router has WiFi capabilities. Your cell phone has WiFi capabilities and when you turn on WiFi, it connects to your home WiFi network and therefore can use that network to access the internet.

Email is a way of sending messages (limitation on size is based on your domain) to others who have email. The name after the @ symbol is who houses the mail servers (i.e., @yahoo.com). Your email address in front of the @ sign designates your address. If you have a connection to the internet and a program that allows you to use email (need software like Outlook or Yahoo mail, etc.), then you can send and receive messages from others with email.

IM is instant messenger. It's s short form of email but requires all the people you are sending to to be on the same program. I.e., you can't send an IM to an AOL IM user if you are on BlackBerry IM. Only those with the same IM can communicate and typically, you have to be on line to communicate. The communication is typically in real time those some allow the saving of messages if you send and the person is not available.

Email and IM were explained above. You can't send an IM to an email address.

A Smartphone is a mobile device that allows you to do email, IM, MMS and SMS if you are set up. Hope this helps.
