The real reason we celebrate Cinco de Mayo here in the U.S. is because the Jose Cuervo company wanted to increase the sales of tequila before the Summer. Tequila sales were great in the summertime, but they wanted to find a reason to celebrate before the Summer. They searched history books until they found an occasion... an insignificant battle in Mexico in the beginning of May. Jose Cuervo popularized Cinco de Mayo by merchandizing all the liquor stores, grocery stores, etc. with tons Cinco de Mayo point-of-sale (posters, signs, etc.) So now Jose Cuervo starts selling a ton of tequila a month earlier than they used to.
