Central/South American History - The location of Santa Anna`s leg!

Expert: Daniel Hogan - 11/7/2000

Question
Hi, I have a question posed to our Latin American History class for extra credit. Our professor told us the story of Santa Anna`s leg being amputated and then used by the people as a monument later on. But his tricky question for us was "Where do the remains of that same leg reside today? It`s not where you think it is." We have class tonight, so time is of the essence. I did try yesterday to ask the question, but the could not get it posted. thanks for any help you can offer. Barbara

Answer
Hi Barbara,
I cannot fully answer your question immediately. Often we have to do our own research as well, that is why we are given three days to answer. Therefore, I can only give you a partial answer.
Santa Ana's leg was originally buried at a place called Manga de Clavo. It was dug up when he rose to power and reburied in the main cathedral in Mexico City. In 1844, there was a revolt against him, and his leg was dug up and dragged through the streets. After this, I cannot find what happened to it without further research.
I do know that his wooden leg was captured by American troops during the Mex-American War and sent to Chicago to be displayed. I hope this helps.

Hi again Barbara,
I knew where Santa Ana's wooden leg was, I could not find where his real leg was. At the end of the Mex-American War, one of several of his legs was captured by an Illinois unit and was subsequently displayed at an expo in Chicago. This is the one that is in Springfield. According to other teachers of Mexican history I have recently spoken to, Santa Ana's real leg was destroyed.
