Ceramics/underglaze

Question
I made a small clay sculpture, smoothed it with a sponge and let it dry.  then I painted 2 thin coats of underglaze on it.  After it was fired properly, the undergaze came out cracked and peeling....any idea what went wrong?

Answer
Hi Linda, I can think of 2 things to check, and test's will confirm. There was contamination of sorts in the sponging process or there is a problem with the underglaze.

Do 2 tests
1. sponge a test piece and apply a different u/glaze and fire.
2. Apply the offending U/glaze to a dry unsponged test piece and fire.

The testing will be the quickest way to analyze your problem
