Ceramics/Ceramics with writing on them

Question
Someone gave me ceramics with writing on the bottom, can this writing be removed?
They said that nail polish remover would do it but it doesn't.

Answer
Linda,
Writing on ceramics is performed by a variety of methods. If the writing on your piece looks like it was written with a pencil or strong marker it was probably executed with an underglaze pencil. An underglaze pencil is just that; a pencil that writes with underglaze. Is it underneath the glaze? One for sure method is to use a dremil or small grinder to grind it off. If you can shoot me a photo of the writing or better explain how it appears I could make better recommendations.
