Ceramics/plate clocks

Question
Hi Leisha, I'm doing a project for my MOPS group that I got from a Martha Stewart magazine - making clocks out of plates. The problem I'm running into is some of the plates are very difficult to drill holes into. My husband is using a 3/8" carbide tipped drill bit intended for glass and tile. We were told to spray water on the bit while drilling (I'm not sure why) so I've been doing that to. Some of the plates were easy to get through but others we've barely been able to make a dent. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Answer
Kerrie,
I love MOPS! In a former life, when I owned my own marketing business they were one of my clients!

Is the drill bit you're using Silicon Carbide? That should work. I place a piece of painters tape down first, mark the hole & then drill. This prevents the chipping out of the glaze. I've not used water. I would imagine that is to help with the dust and/or flying chips. BE SURE to wear safety glasses.

Let me know. There are other ways to try. Leisha
