Ceramics/wax painting on fired ceramics?

Question
Dear Sam,
My 90 year old, still pretty sharp, dad was remembering when his mother and aunts used to "paint" on pottery with colored wax. They were all decent painters. He described it as like sealing wax, but different colors. This was probably in the early 1930's in East Texas.
Have you ever heard of such a thing? If so, how was it done? Maybe it was just a result of artistic yearning and materials on hand during the Depression years in the US.
 Any response would be appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Toni,
No I have never heard of this process. Being non functional it would have been a process for decoration, or exprecessing ones artistic prowess. The pots would have been able to be displayed as a finished work and at any time scraped clean and a new art work applied.
