Ceramics - removing old clay

Expert: Leisha Hiester - 1/19/2009

Question
Hi,  I reciently purchased some old ceramic molds.  I am new to the ceramic business.  I have painted  them for years.  My question is-  some of the molds have clay (or whatever you call it) inside the molds.  how do i go about cleaning them out.  thanks cindy

Answer
Cindy,
Typically the first time you cast a piece it will pull out all the old stuff. You may lose that piece, but it's worth it to clean up the mold. Never use anything sharp on the mold. If they're real bad you can sometimes wet them down to loosen it, but then you need to take care to allow them to fully dry before you pour again. Leisha
