Question

lamp and ladies
Hello,

I have a few questions that I hope is not out of your area of expertise. I have a few items (in the photo) that are made of some sort of clay. The lamp (art deco style) is original and is a clay material as well. The ladies in uniform are about 9 3/4" and 12 3/4" while the lamp is about 14 1/2" tall. From the pictures could you possibly provide me with more info... such as year, material, and if there is any value to this type of art?

Thank you in advance.

Answer
Malcom,

They appear to be what is called "Chalkware."

Chalkware

Chalkware is really plaster of Paris decorated with watercolors. One type was molded from Staffordshire and other porcelain models and painted and sold as inexpensive decorations in the nineteenth century. This type is very valuable today. Figures of plaster, made from about 1910 to 1940 for use as prizes at carnivals, are also known as chalkware. Kewpie dolls made of chalkware will be found in their own category.
